About this tool

Swiss VAT Calculator is Toolio's free net/gross calculator for the current Swiss VAT rates. Convert net to gross or gross to net, mix multiple line items at different rates (8.1% standard, 2.6% reduced, 3.8% accommodation, 0% exempt) and watch the totals update live. No account, no install, everything runs in your browser. Built for Swiss freelancers, fiduciaries, small businesses and anyone who needs to quickly check how much VAT lands on a quote or invoice — without rebuilding an Excel formula or looking up the rates each time. A handy sidekick when drafting quotes, checking a supplier invoice, or tidying up before quarterly VAT filing.

Who uses it and why

  • Freelancers writing a quote and needing the gross figure with 8.1% VAT applied.

  • Hoteliers and hospitality applying the 3.8% accommodation rate cleanly to overnight stays.
  • Small businesses below the VAT threshold, modelling how prices would change if they added VAT.
  • Buyers cross-checking a supplier invoice and pulling the net amount out of a gross total.

Frequently asked questions

What are the current Swiss VAT rates?
Since 1 January 2024 Switzerland has four rates: 8.1% standard rate for most goods and services, 2.6% reduced rate for groceries, books, medication and similar essentials, 3.8% special rate for accommodation services (hotels, B&Bs) and 0% for exempt services like healthcare and education. Before 2024 the rates were 7.7% / 2.5% / 3.7%.
How is gross calculated from net and vice versa?
Net to gross: multiply net by (1 + rate), e.g. CHF 100 × 1.081 = CHF 108.10. Gross to net: divide gross by (1 + rate), e.g. CHF 108.10 / 1.081 = CHF 100. The calculator does both automatically and shows the pure VAT amount as well.
When should I use which rate?
8.1% applies to most sales and services (consulting, software, standard goods). 2.6% to staple foods, books, newspapers, medication and plants. 3.8% only to accommodation including breakfast. 0% to legally exempt services like insurance, medical treatment and education. When in doubt, the official list from the Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV) is authoritative.
How is this different from the full Toolio app?
This calculator is a standalone helper — you enter amounts and see the result. Toolio Core (CHF 24/seat/month) handles VAT automatically inside quotes, invoices and QR-bills, ties them to projects and clients, and exports everything for your fiduciary. If you invoice regularly, Core pays for itself; for one-off calculations the calculator is enough.

Calculating VAT regularly — or also issuing the invoice?

Toolio Core handles VAT directly inside quotes, invoices and Swiss QR-bills — with Swiss standards, projects, clients and fiduciary export. 30 days free, then CHF 24/seat/month.
